Pakyong Airport is a planned RCS airport in Pakyong, a town about 22 miles (35 kilometres) south of Gangtok, the state capital of Sikkim, India. It covers roughly 81 acres (201 ha) and is located in Pakyong, a town about 31 miles (22 kilometres) south of Gangtok. It is one of the highest airports in India at 4646 feet (1476 metres). It is the first greenfield airport in the Northeastern Region of India and the only airport in Sikkim. Commercial flights began on October 4, 2018, soon after its opening. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport on September 24, 2018. Despite its beautiful engineering, the airport has been described as one of the most scenic airports in the world by major media outlets worldwide. Commercial flight operations have been hampered by poor weather conditions, as the airport was originally planned and designed as a VFR airport. Local residents and authorities have been advocating for the expansion of the strip area to accommodate commercial flights, but no action has been taken.
